Defiant Glam
A book in collaboration with artist Jovan Glušica.
“Fusing my love of painting, sculpture, fashion iconography, pop culture, and DIY ethics, my aim was to celebrate true individuality in a homogenous world. At its core, Defiant Glam is a personal exploration of expression through garments, a love child of isolation and desire to be a part of the world and celebrate togetherness. Its driving force is an unburdened child-like mode of exploration, delving into the depths of queer desires with my inner child as the tour guide. Freed from pressures of the fashion industry and its trends, this collection harkensback to my life in the early 2000s and a yearning for a seemingly simpler time, throughthe lens of adulthood. Through the collection, there are obvious reoccurring motives of serpents. demons, and heartbreaks, all chained together in an eclectic combination of Romantic punk and Androgynous Glamour. The Snake signifies my blatant mocking of the Phallic symbol and simultaneously celebrating its fluid shape. The Devil reveals my deeply rooted obsession with queering biblical figures in a highly sexualised fantastical way, and is almost a form of self portraiture. Hearts signify wearing one’s heart on their sleeve, even if it’s a sleeveless garment. Spikes, thorns and barbed wire represent a feeling of being restrained as a queerperson, adorning one-self with a sort of armour, or a badge of honour.”
